UPDATE: Brent Stewart Killed in Farm Vehicle Accident with Train in Savoy, Illinois

SAVOY, IL — A collision between a farm vehicle and an Amtrak train left one man dead in Savoy, Illinois on Thursday, April 24th, 2014, according to the news article from the News-Gazette.

Officials have said that they have reason to believe that 42-year-old Brent Stewart was killed when the Ag-Chem TerraGator farm vehicle he was driving was struck by an Amtrak train while driving on the east side of Highway 45 around 7:00 Thursday night.

Scene of the Accident

Emergency responders transported Brent Stewart to nearby Carle Foundation Hospital where he died a short time after his arrival. No other injuries were detailed in the news report.

The investigation into the accident is currently ongoing.

Commentary:

While we do not yet know much about this accident, one of the facts reported in the news article caught my eye. The fact that this vehicle was a large farm vehicle makes me wonder if there was anything wrong with it mechanically at the time of the accident. Particularly the singular front wheel. If the front wheel became caught between the railroad ties or rails, it may not have had enough power to get it out in time to avoid the accident. If this turns out to be the case, there could be some liability in the hands of the vehicle’s manufacturer, depending on how the facts fall into place.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
