UPDATE: Homer Berkowitz Killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident in Tallahassee, Florida

TALLAHASSEE, FL — A serious accident took the life of one person in Tallahassee, Florida on Monday, April 21st, 2014, according to a news article released by WCTV.

Investigators from the Florida State Police have said that they have reason to believe Homer Berkowitz was killed when the motorcycle he was driving struck the rear of a tractor-trailer while driving on Capital Circle around 2:30 Monday morning.

Scene of the Accident

Homer Berkowitz was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics when they arrived. the driver of the tractor-trailer was identified in the report as Frank Morrow, who was immediately unhurt after the accident.

The investigation into the crash is being handled by the Florida State Police.

Commentary:

At first glance, many would be quick to blame the accident on the motorcycle, but just for a minute allow me to look at it from another angle. Many people are unaware of how tractor-trailer lights are connected to the driver. When the driver pushes on the brake, a signal is sent from the pedal to through a wire to the lights that are connected on the trailer. This wire is hanging free over the open road between the trailer and the passenger compartment on the truck. Is it really outside the realm of possibility that this was not properly connected and broken? This is why accidents that seem open-and-shut always warrant a second glance.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.

  1. I appreciate you mentioning it could be something other than the obvious…Known Homer for over a decade and he was one of the most responsible bike riders I’d ever known. I think that’s what makes this hard to understand…He will be greatly missed. He was an amazing person.
