UPDATE: Larry Johnson Killed in Alleged Drunk Driving Accident in Monroe, Louisiana

MONROE, LA — One person is dead and another is seriously injured after a crash in Monroe, Louisiana on Sunday, April 20th, 2014, according to a news report from KNOE.

Investigators have said that they believe Larry Johnson was killed when he was struck by a vehicle in the 800 block of Burroughs around 11:30 Sunday night. A vehicle is thought to have pushed through a gate when it struck Johnson.

Scene of the Accident

Larry Johnson was killed in the crash, while his son sustained unspecified injuries in the accident. The driver of the vehicle was identified in the report as Markeda Porter, who currently faces drunk driving related charges in connection with the accident.

Police are still investigating the accident.

Commentary:

While the investigation is still underway, this kind of accident may speak to the need for good social host liability. In the State of Texas, there is a set of ‘dram shop laws’ that make sure alcohol is served responsibly both at bars, and at private parties at home. If a person is at a private house party, and the person is served alcohol to the point of intoxication before leaving to cause an accident, the hosts of the party can be held liable for the accident. Many people do not see this as fair, but is it really reasonable or safe to give somebody an intoxicating amount of alcohol before allowing them to leave and drive away?

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
