Shelby Township, MI — Authorities reported an accident in which a woman and small child were backed over by a minivan in Shelby Township, Michigan. The accident took place on Wednesday, around 6:30 in the afternoon, at a Taco Bell near Schoenherr Roads and 23 Mile Road.

According to reports, a 16-year old driver was in a Chrysler minivan that backed over the 36-year old woman and 2-year old child.

The woman was seriously injured and was taken to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. The child was taken to Children’s Hospital in Detroit. There’s been no update on either one’s current condition.

Police have said that they don’t believe alcohol to have played a role in the accident.

The accident is still being investigated. Those with information are being asked to call the Shelby Township PD at (586) 731-2121.

Commentary

Is it possible that the woman and child who were hit were walking too close to the minivan? Yes, it’s possible. However, that doesn’t change a thing when it comes to the driver’s responsibility to look around and make sure he wasn’t in danger of hitting someone while driving his van. Actually, the closer the woman and child were standing to the van, the easier it should have been to see them and avoid the collision.

Unfortunately, it seems like paying attention to his surroundings was the last thing on the driver’s mind, as reports say he peeled out of his parking space so quickly that the impact with the woman and child blew out his rear window. Unfortunately, not everyone understands the amount of damage they’re capable of inflicting when they get behind the wheel.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
