Bicyclist Injured Near Capital Metro Bus on Lavaca St. in Austin, TX

Austin, TX — Authorities are reporting that a bicyclist was injured when he fell off his bike near a Capital Metro bus on Lavaca Street. The accident took place Wednesday, around 5:30 in the afternoon.

Initial reports had the bicyclist being hit by the bus, but those have turned out to be incorrect.

The bicyclist was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge for minor injuries.

Commentary

I know that a bicyclist being hit by a Metro bus is kind of sensational, and I wonder if that had anything to do with news outlets jumping the gun and reporting that the man had been hit. But even though the story has turned out to be much different  — thankfully — that what some originally thought, I’d still like to get the cyclist’s side of things. Anyone who’s ever ridden a bike, especially in downtown Austin, knows that when you’re riding on a crowded street and a car gets close to you, it’s very easy to lose your nerve. Even if you’re an experienced rider, when it looks like a vehicle is going to hit you and your choice is between holding on and jumping off the bike, you tend to lean toward jumping off the bike. So, even though the rider in this case wasn’t actually struck by the bus, it’s still possible it was the bus that caused the accident.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
