Merrillville, IN — Police are investigating alcohol and speed as possible contributing factors to an accident that occurred last Saturday. The accident took place early in the morning in Merrillville, Indiana.
Melissa Barker was a passenger in a car that hit a tree in the 9500 block of Colorado Street. The driver of the car — whose identity hasn’t been released — lost control and hit the tree. Barker was ejected from the vehicle and killed. The driver was conscious and walking when emergency workers arrived on the scene, but taken to a local hospital. There have been no updates on the driver’s current condition.
According to reports, Barker and the driver of the car were with some friends at a bonfire. Local police had earlier responded to a noise complaint against the group. Barker and the driver had gone to the store and were headed back when the accident occurred.
