GALLATIN, NY — A tanker truck rollover accident sent one driver to the hospital in Gallatin, New York on Friday, April 11th, 2014, according to a news report from The Oneida Dispatch.

Investigators have said that they believe Scott Brandt was hurt when the tanker truck he was driving that was carrying heating fluid crashed and rolled to one side while driving on Snyderville Road on Friday morning around 9:45 a.m.

Scene of the Accident

Emergency personnel transported Scott Brandt to a nearby hospital for the treatment of unspecified injuries. He was thought to have been alone in the truck when it crashed, and no other injuries were outlined in the news summary.

The investigation is being handled by officials from the New York State Police.

Commentary:

Bearing in mind that authorities are still piecing this accident together, many people I’ve talked to would be quick to put all the fault on the driver, when that may be jumping to conclusions. While there is always a chance that this accident was caused by driver error, keep in mind that trucks break down all the time just like regular consumer vehicles do, and just like regular cars, breakdowns can lead to major accidents. A combination of faulty brakes, a shifting load, and a power steering fault could lead to any number of accidents, but one thing is for sure. Never once have I seen a tractor-trailer roll when the driver was in complete control, whether that control loss was from driver negligence or a faulty truck needs to be determined before we jump to conclusions on a news article.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
