Corpus Christi, TX — A worker was hospitalized after the communication tower he was working on at the Corpus Christi International Airport collapsed. The accident took place on Tuesday morning.
The Federal Aviation Administration is currently upgrading the airport’s communication systems by removing some of the older, smaller towers. The injured worker was climbing the tower when it fell over.
According to reports, the victim was wearing a harness at the time of the collapse, and none of the injuries he sustained were life-threatening. He’s expected to make a full recovery.

From the details that have been reported on, this looks like a pure workers’ compensation case, which is fortunate for the employer, considering the injuries the victim could have sustained in an accident like this. However, there is a gross negligence clause in the workers’ comp law, so if — just to use this accident as an example — the employer sent the worker up on the tower knowing that it was structurally unsound, or if the harness he was wearing was defective, he would have some sort of legal recourse. Again, I’m just using this accident as an example, because from what’s been reported on, it doesn’t seem as though anything like that happened.
