Commentary
Despite the number of truck accidents you may hear about in any given amount of time, each one needs to be treated as a special case, because 18-wheelers are so unlike regular cars. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, 18-wheelers aren’t particularly safe vehicles. As a matter of fact, they’re pretty unsafe. In an accident like this one, there are a couple of things we need to look at. Were there any problems with the structural integrity of Mr. Richardson’s truck? Were there any mechanical failures, with the brakes or the truck’s other collision avoidance systems? Things like proximity sensors and lane departure warning system are both things that would need to be looked at. On the surface, this is an accident that seems to be pretty simple. But most truck drivers understand the damage they’re capable of causing should they get into an accident, so I prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt in situations like these.
