Commentary
In the reports I’ve read, a public relations rep for the company said that accidents sometimes happen. Well, yes, that’s true. But circumstances need to be extraordinary for an accident like this to happen. Let’s look at what happened. This same rep said that the men injured were replacing filters and bringing them back into service when the fire occurred. These filters are designed to prevent this sort of thing from happening. It’s true that over time they need to be replaced and can fail, but that’s over time. Generally, they don’t burst into flames right out of the box. The gas plant’s rep said that if you look over the history of their facilities, you’d see they were “very reliable operators,” and I have no reason not to take him at his word. So in this case, where a product failed at the very start of it’s service life, I think there are some questions that need to be asked of the manufacturer, because something isn’t adding up here.
