PUTNAM COUNTY, IN — A major collision between a commercial van and a tractor-trailer sent one driver to the hospital in Putnam County, Indiana on Tuesday, March 25th, 2014, according to a news report from WTHI-TV.
Police have said that they have reason to believe Scott Dixon was hurt when the commercial van he was driving skidded unexpectedly across the median and collided with a tractor-trailer while driving on Interstate 70. The accident happened near the 41 mile marker.

Scott Dixon was taken by EMS personnel to nearby Regional Hospital Terre Haute after he was cut from the vehicle. The driver of the tractor-trailer did not report immediate injuries after the accident.
The Indiana State Police are currently assisting with the crash investigation.

The news describes this accident in a way that paints the accident victim as the cause of the accident, and while this may be the case, there may be factors which we do not see. Commercial vehicles, be they tractor-trailers, box trucks panel vans or otherwise tend to be driven longer and harder than regular vehicles. Due to this heavy wear and tear, the parts necessary to keep them roadworthy such as braking, steering components, and tires give out after enough stress. I’m not saying this is what happened here, but there is a very real chance of mechanical failure due to the natural stresses the vehicle is exposed to in its lifespan.
