One Injured in Tractor-Trailer Accident on Highway 27 in Groveland, Florida

GROVELAND, FL — A tractor-trailer collision has hospitalized one truck driver in Groveland, Florida on Wednesday, February 26th, 2014, according to a news report from WESH.

Police have said that they have reason to think an unidentified truck driver was hurt when the tractor-trailer they were driving collided with the rear of a tractor-trailer that is thought to have been attempting a U-turn while driving on Highway 27.

Scene of the Accident

According to the news report, one person was taken by EMS responders to a nearby hospital where he was being treated for a number of unspecified injuries.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Commentary:

Many people I have run this accident by have said that they would fault the rear driver based on the news article, but there are a few details missing from the report. What I’m wondering is, “was the U-turn the driver was trying to make legal? Did he have the right of way? Was he stopped appropriately in the road before the crash?” These are all potential factors that could shift the liability of this accident onto the other driver if the facts line up. Simply jumping to conclusion based on a news article written by somebody who did not witness the accident may not give an accurate opinion on what really happened in the crash. While there is a chance that this accident was caused by driver inattention, assuming that off the bat from a news article would be hasty at best.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
