Joseph Scott Injured in Tractor-Trailer Accident in Forsyth County, North Carolina

FORSYTH COUNTY, NC — Joseph Scott was hurt in a tractor-trailer accident that was reported in Forsyth County, North Carolina on Wednesday, March 4th, 2015. News reports out of the area said that the crash happened sometime Wednesday morning.

28-year-old Joseph Scott was injured when a pickup truck was struck by a tractor-trailer while driving on Darrow Road near the intersection with Highway 158. Police said that the pickup truck was broken down and being pushed off the road when the tractor-trailer struck the truck from the rear, pinning Scott between the pickup and the tractor-trailer.

Scott was taken by EMS to a nearby hospital where they were being treated for unspecified injuries.

The driver of the truck was identified as Roosevelt Anderson, who currently faces charges of failure to control speed in connection with the accident.

Commentary:

Just from what I’ve seen in the news, I can tell that a lot went wrong for this accident to happen. First of all, I want to know why a truck driver, from his very high vantage point, failed to see the broken down vehicle he was bearing down on. Secondly, I want to know why the driver was traveling at a speed high enough to make stopping impossible in the event of an emergency. Third, I want to know if the truck driver was even looking at the road at the time of the accident.

Now, the news said that the driver of the tractor-trailer was charged with failure to control speed after the accident. Many people would see this and automatically assume that the trucking company will take responsibility, but the harsh reality is, I’ve never seen that happen once in the 25 years I’ve been doing this. For some reason, the trucking industry sees every claim as frivolous and excessive (despite the fact that damages have to be proven), and fight them tooth and nail using nearly unlimited legal resources. I’ve seen warranted, valid claims be dismantled by this system time and time again when people decided to fight them on their own.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
