Matthew Middleton, Jennifer Macias Killed in Multi-Vehicle Accident on Highway 49 in Paragould, AR

Paragould, AR — Two people died in an accident involving three vehicles in Paragould, Arkansas, on Saturday, December 13, 2014. The accident took place near the Carriage Hills subdivision, on Highway 49.

Around 5:30 in the afternoon, Jennifer Macias and Matthew Middleton were passengers in a vehicle traveling south on 49 and collided head-on with a northbound truck that had apparently stopped in a turn lane.

Middleton and Macias’ vehicle crashed into the truck and both individuals died. The driver of that car, as well as the driver of the truck were both seriously injured and taken to local hospitals.

Reports aren’t clear on how exactly the third vehicle was involved in the accident. The driver wasn’t hurt.

Police are still investigating.

Commentary

Unfortunately, information on exactly how this accident happened is a little hard to come by, with every news outlet reporting it a little different. Apparently, a truck had come into a turn lane, putting it in the path of two oncoming vehicles. One vehicle crashed into the truck head-on, with the third being in some way involved. Who’s liable for the accident is going to depend on how exactly things played out? Did the truck come into the other vehicles’ lane of travel? If so, was it illegally? Did one of the vehicle involved fail to yield the right of way to the other? Liability in an accident like this has the potential to go either way, depending on the answers to these questions. Hopefully, police will be able to shed some light on things in the coming days.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
