Sunderland, MD — A man from Chesapeake Beach was killed after a Waldorf man tried to make a U-turn on Solomons Island Road yesterday, causing a major car accident. It happened at about 5:30 p.m. and the Chesapeake Beach man who died was identified as 28-year old Joseph Fernandes.
The accident happened near the China King Restaurant, Calvert County authorities reported. Apparently, 22-yea old Ryan Douglas was driving his pickup truck north along Solomons Island Road that evening when he tried to make a U-turn near the aforementioned restaurant.
He failed to yield to oncoming traffic, however, and pulled into the path of a southbound Dodge truck driven by Joseph Fernandes. The two trucks collided, leaving Fernandes, Douglas, and Douglas’ passenger, Jonathan Douglas, with injuries.
All three men were taken to local hospitals, but Fernandes was the most seriously injured and he later died that evening. The other driver, Ryan Douglas, was said to have failed to yield the right of way, according to the police. However, it’s not really clear if he’ll face charges as a result.
