Tyler, TX — Mark Castillo has been identified as the man was killed after falling four floors at the Resident Inn in Tyler, Texas, near the intersection of West Heritage Drive and South Broadway Avenue.
The accident took place last Thursday, the 18th of September, around 12:30 in the afternoon. The hotel has been undergoing construction for some months and witnesses to the accident said that Castillo was supervising the project.
Castillo was killed after getting into a wooden box that was balancing on top of a forklift. Workers at the scene were quoted in the report as saying that, in an attempt to demonstrate to other workers behavior that was inappropriate, Castillo jumped up and down in the box. The box then tipped over and fell off the forklift. Castillo was killed instantly.
The construction site has been shut down and workers aren’t sure when they’ll be returning. Workers investigated by local news outlets have said that the work site was not safe, and that the box Castillo died in was not strapped to the forklift like it should have been. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been called in to investigate the accident, which should take anywhere from two weeks to a month month.
Scene of the Accident
At the risk of sounding crass, this is example of what you shouldn’t do at a construction site. Let’s look at things this way: there’s a reason there are safety regulations. There’s a reason that OSHA takes its job so seriously. It’s because accidents happen in the most unexpected of ways, and you’ve always got to be ready for them.
From what the news is reporting, it seems as if the construction company’s worker’ comp policy is really going to be the only thing that can help the victim’s family out. Typically, we’re not huge fans of the workers’ comp system around here, but again, it seems as if this is the only thing here that’s going to be of any help.
Look, I wasn’t at the scene of this accident. I’m just going off of what the news has reported. Is it possible that there are a few facts missing here? Of course it is. However, if what’s been reported is accurate, then it seems as if the cause of this accident is readily apparent.
