UPDATE: Kevin Burton Killed in Tractor-Trailer Accident in Jackson County, Indiana

JACKSON COUNTY, IN — One person has been killed after a collision between a motorcycle and a tractor-trailer that happened in Jackson County, Indiana on Friday, May 9th, 2014, according to a news article from WTHR.

Kevin Burton was killed when the motorcycle he was driving was struck by a tractor-trailer that was merging onto Interstate 65 sometime Friday morning.

Scene of the Accident

Kevin Burton was pronounced dead on the scene by emergency responders when they arrived. No other injuries were outlined in the news report.

The Indiana State Troopers were helping local authorities with the crash investigation.

Granted the news article is sparse on details, but the fact that this truck was merging on the interstate when the accident happens poses quite a few questions in my mind. Do not assume that because these are trained, professional drivers that they cannot forget to check their mirrors when changing lanes or merging. Motorcyclists are tough to spot in a regular vehicle, imagine the difficulty when the truck drivers are a full eight-feet above a motorcycle. If this truck driver failed to check his mirror, a mistake drivers make every day, the trucking company could be liable for the accident, depending on how the facts fall into place.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
