Commentary
This is a tragedy, and unfortunately, it’s a tragedy that I’ve seen happen quite a few times. Typically, if someone is injured or killed in an accident involving a school bus, it’s very difficult for any sort of damages to be recovered. The bus belongs to the school district, which belongs to the city, and bringing legal action against a municipal entity isn’t easy. However, this school bus had been contracted by a private school, and that changes things drastically. If the witness reports are accurate, and the accident was caused because the driver was trying to beat a red light, then they’re obviously going to be liable for the damages, and it’ll be their responsibility to make that right. How the company that owns the bus sees things will be another matter altogether. Also unfortunate is the fact that these companies rarely have a victim’s well-being at heart. That’s an often overlooked fact that those involved in these sorts of situations need to be aware of.
