Commentary:
Whenever I review an accident like this, I cant help but wonder what pushed the truck off the road and into the shoulder. Then I remember that truckers are just as human as regular drivers, and fall victim to the same distractions we do. I’ve even talked to truckers who believe they have more distraction than the average driver, due to the amount of radio, GPS equipment, and with the temptation to peer down into other cars on the road all can lead to serious accidents. Luckily investigators can examine all of the equipment in the truck to see if he was using his phone or GPS when the accident occurred. Just a few months ago this firm researched an accident where a truck driver was surfing Facebook on his cell phone when they struck the back of a car and killed the driver, and without cameras inside the truck facing the driver, we would have never known this.
