Johnson and Johnson to Discontinue Sales of Vaginal Mesh Implants

Johnson & Johnson has announced that the company will stop sells of vaginal mesh implants following several lawsuits aimed at the products effectiveness. The company notes over 1000 pending lawsuits following use of the device. J&J has asked federal judges overseeing product liability litigation to cease their request for continued safety studies.

Commentary
While Im glad unsafe products are being taken off the market I hope this does not stop the process of finding help for female victims of stress urinary incontinence. It should be noted that several other brands of vaginal mesh are still on the market including those made by CR Bard and Boston Scientific Corp. In a letter from the FDA the agency has said they may reclassify the devices into a higher-risk category than where they currently reside. Just my opinion but the agencys rules that allow devices to receive expedited approval to the market may want to be revamped as well. Currently products undergo this quick turnaround (called a 510(k) process) when a company can prove similar products already exist on the market. Thats fine but when those other products are faulty or defective this creates a market flooded with poor products. J&Js decision to discontinue sales could be an admission of the products problems and an effort to mitigate further legal action.
