103,000 Gerber Gator Combo Axes Recalled

A recent recall listed by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that Gerber Legendary Blades has recalled about 103000 Gerber Gator Combo Axes due to a possible laceration hazard. The product is a hybrid ax and knife where the knife can be stored in the axs handle; however injuries can occur as the knife can escape the axs handle when the ax is used to chop or hammer. Five injury reports of lacerations requiring stitches have been received by Gerber. The affected product was sold throughout the U.S. at Bass Pro Shops Dicks Sporting Goods and The Sportsmans Guide since March of 2005. Prices ranged from $28 to $60. The Gerber Combo Axe II is not affected by this recall. Those with the affected product are encouraged to remove the knife from the ax or to contact Gerber at 1-877-314-9130 or gerbergear.com to obtain a free handle cap that can be placed over the base of the ax in order to contain the knife for storage or transport.

In the event that a person suffers injury due to a product that may be inherently dangerous an injured person may be able to pursue a product liability claim based on strict liability. Even though a product may have been manufactured and designed correctly it may still be an inherently unsafe object. In my humble estimation sticking a knife into the base of an ax would seem to be quite an unsafe combination especially if there are no mechanisms in place that keep the knife secure within the base.

NHTSA Investigates Car Seat Heaters and Possible Burn Injuries

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating car seat heaters in order to ascertain their safety in connection to reports of burn injuries caused by such heated seats. According to burn doctor David Greenhalgh 105 degrees is the maximum temperature that such a heated seat should ever reach. Paralyzed people and those with sensory issues are especially susceptible to such possible injuries from heated seats. Greenhalgh said that he had treated one patient with third-degree burns due to a heated seat that reached 120 degrees in a certain spot. Recommendations for mitigating the opportunities for such accidents to occur are: disconnection of seat heaters when in use by those with sensory issues a maximum temp for car seat heaters and an automatic timer that will shut off such heaters.

4.8 Million Box Fans Recalled by Lasko Products Inc.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a recall for 4.8 million Lasko Products box fans due to a possible motor electrical failure that may result in a fire risk. Lasko has received seven reports of fire but no reports of injury. Of the seven reported fire accidents two caused extensive property damage to a house and one caused damage to a barn. The affected fans were built in the U.S. and sold through merchandisers throughout the country from July 2002 to Dec. 2005. Consumers with affected models should immediately discontinue use. Lasko can be called at 877-445-1314 to request a fused plug safety adapter.

Large scale recalls can be fearful due to the fact that such a large number of faulty products may be in use throughout the country. Additionally not all affected consumers may hear about the apparent defect before an accident occurs. Product manufacturers bear a legal responsibility to ensure that their products do not pose an injurious hazard to consumers. When such incidents occur that may result in injury a product manufacturer can be held civilly liable for the results of their negligence in allowing such a product to be mass-released.
