Offshore oil rig near Louisiana explodes injuring seven workers; 12 workers still missing

At least twelve people are missing and 7 people have been critically injured following an explosion & fire on the Deep Water Horizon oil rig on Tuesday, April 20th, 2010.  The oil rig is located in the Gulf of Mexico about 50 miles southeast of Venice, Louisiana.  The rig is currently under contract from Transocean to British Petroleum.  As of writing this article Wednesday the rig is still aflame, tilting badly and threatening to topple over.

Offshore oil rig workers are protected under the Jones Act.  The Jones Act protects seamen who have been injured because their employer did not provide a safe workplace.  The injured seaman must prove that the injury was caused due to employer negligence and an unsafe work environment.  Cases involving maritime law can be filed in both state & federal court.  Knowing in which court to file and why, can make all the difference in cases like these.  An experienced Texas attorney can help in a similar situation.  An attorney will work with you to ensure you have the best chance of a successful claim.
