Framingham, MA: Electricians Burned by Explosion at Library

Framingham, MA — There was an accident reported at a library off Lexington Street in Framingham back in October, where two electricians were burned and sent to hospital. Police said that the two workers were in the basement of the library on Saturday morning, October 17, and were working on an electrical panel when something went wrong and there was a small explosion.

The two workers, both males aged 30 and 39, were rushed to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries. One worker suffered second-degree burns to his arm while the other was treated for second-degree and third-degree burns to nearly 40% of his body.

The names of the workers and the company they were working for weren’t released. So far, it looks like the library was closed for a period after the explosion, but there’s been no word on what actually caused it.

Commentary:

As any electrician worth their salt will tell you, no electrical work can be done in a building apart from a licensed electrician. There’s a reason that you have to receive special training and equipment to do electrical work: it’s very dangerous. If an accident happens because unlicensed and untrained workers were told do something out of their league, so to speak, their supervisor or employer might be liable for any accident that were to happen. I’m not saying that’s what happened here, but it’s something to keep in mind. It sounds as if these were licensed workers, going by what the news is reporting.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
