Yulee, FL: Worker Injured by Pickup Truck on Highway 200

Yulee, FL — About two weeks ago, there was an accident in Yulee that involved a highway construction worker, a pickup truck, and a semi-truck that left the construction worker with injuries. Police said that a construction worker was hit on Highway 200 by a pickup truck that had been rear-ended by a semi.

This happened on Thursday evening, November 19, 2015 along Highway 200, just east of U.S. 17.

According to the news reports, the highway worker was working in a construction zone that evening. The details of what took place are a little fuzzy, but it looks like a semi-truck crashed into the back of a pickup truck, which then struck the construction worker as he stood in the roadway.

It’s possible that traffic had backed up due to the work zone and the semi-truck driver simply wasn’t watching the road, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Right now, the name of the injured worker wasn’t released, but he’s believed to be in stable condition.

Commentary:

If this semi-truck driver wasn’t paying attention that evening, then it seems obvious that driver would be liable for this accident. In turn, since most truckers work for larger transportation or trucking companies, that may mean that their employer would be vicariously liable.

However, I don’t really know what happened here. Hopefully, there was an in-depth investigation that took place, preferably one separate from the police investigation. As the article below outlines, having a third party investigation can be advantageous for many reasons, not the least of which is the fact that professional investigations and experts typically have more time and resources to devote to this kind of thing than your typical police department.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
