Grain Millers Worker Seriously Injured in St. Ansgar Accident

St. Ansgar, IA — In the news this week, there was a story about a worker who was injured at Grain Millers in St. Ansgar (Iowa) after a serious accident. This happened on Saturday, September 19, 2015 and the injured worker has not yet been named.

Grain Millers is a Minnesota-based company and they haven’t said anything about their worker just yet — or the nature of the accident.

The news said that the worker was hurt on Saturday morning and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Rochester, MN where he stayed until at least Monday afternoon. An article was published later that afternoon, saying that he was still hospitalized.

The cause of the accident (and the worker’s name) hasn’t been released yet and the police assured the news outlets that they would be looking into things. OSHA may also be involved here.

Commentary:

It sounds like this company is really watching what they say in public about this accident, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. On the other hand, I’ve always found it a little foreboding when a company refuses to divulge any information on work-related accidents, particularly ones that involve employees being hurt or killed on the job.

On the surface, it sounds like they’re being cautious and thoughtful, but I can’t help but wonder if perhaps companies go quiet because they’re afraid of exposing potentially negligent practices. Again, perhaps they’re just being overly cautious, but I guess my experience in the industry handling work-related accidents has made me a bit cynical. Still, I don’t think any harm can come from having a solid investigation done, if nothing else than put peoples’ minds to ease.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
