Pensacola, FL: Dump Truck Hits School Bus, Injures Harriet Collins & Students

Pensacola, FL — A dump truck reportedly ran red light last week in Pensacola and struck a school bus full of high school students, leaving several injured. Police said that this happened on Thursday afternoon, August 27, and the students were from Pensacola High School. Also injured was the bus driver, Harriet Collins.

According to their reports, a dump truck driven by 33-year old Abraham Larry was headed along Pace Boulevard that afternoon, driving north, when he failed to stop at the red light at Jordan Street.

The dump truck pulled into the intersection and crashed into the side of a passing school bus, causing it to flip over and crash into a utility pole.

There were about 22 students on the bus and about 16 of them were sent to local hospitals to be treated for their injuries.

Abraham Larry hasn’t been with anything regarding this accident and it doesn’t look like he was harmed.

Update [October 9, 2015]:
The dump truck in this accident was owned by G.B. Green Construction. There was an investigation into this company and it turns out that the FHP’s Compliance Investigation Unity cited this company over $11,000 for 24 vehicle maintenance violations, having worn tires, failing to get the truck inspected, and failing to have drug screenings for their employees. The latter is interesting because this driver, Abraham Larry, was allegedly arrested back in June for having cocaine and marijuana.

I’m really taken aback by what I read in the news, because it seems like this dump truck driver really has no excuse for what happened here. I’m not sure what caused him to run the red light that afternoon, but that kind of mistake is completely unacceptable, especially from a professional CDL holder like this one (at least I’m hoping he has a CDL). At the end of the day, whoever this driver worked for may also have to answer for what happened here, as the law would hold them vicariously responsible for the actions of their employee.

It’s a good thing that nobody was killed here and that the injuries weren’t life-threatening, because a dump truck running a red light is a recipe for disaster. To be completely honest, I’m very surprised that no charges are being filed here. At the very least, this driver should be held accountable for the injuries sustained in the wreck.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
