New York, NY — Witnesses to the accident outside the Trump Tower in New York this past Wednesday claim that the MTA bus driver had a green light when he accidentally hit a man walking with a cane. They said that a man was walking across 5th Avenue near the Trump Tower last Wednesday afternoon (August 12, 2015) when he was accidentally hit by a large MTA bus that allegedly had a green light. This accident happened at about 3:45 p.m. in the afternoon and, so far, no names have been released.

The police in New York gave a few details concerning what happened.

As best as they can tell, the man with the can was crossing the street on foot and was approximately in the middle of the roadway when the traffic light turned green. The MTA bus, which was waiting at the light at 5th & 56th Street, started to accelerate and accidentally ran over the man’s legs.

He was badly injured by the accident and had to be rushed to a nearby hospital. Again, no names have been released and it’s not clear if the MTA bus driver is facing any charges.

Commentary:

I’m not really sure what to think about this accident because, on one hand, perhaps this man shouldn’t have been walking in the street in the first place. There have been plenty of folks who have voiced similar opinions online, that’s for sure.

But on the other hand, this is a professional bus driver who makes a living by safely driving people around the city. Are you telling me that his light was green and he immediately started accelerating without checking to see if the intersection was clear? I hope nobody has to remind this bus driver, but a green light doesn’t actually mean “Go,” it means “Proceed With Caution.”

I don’t want to sound too harsh, but it really seems like the bus driver here should’ve been paying more attention. As for all the folks accusing the victim here of “darting” into traffic, recall that he was using a cane. I highly doubt he was “darting” anywhere.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
