Accident on New Road near Stripes in Waco, TX leaves Motorcyclist Injured

Waco, TX — A man on a motorcycle was injured and rushed to a hospital earlier today (Wednesday, August 12, 2015) after an accident with an SUV. Police said they were called to the scene around 5:30 a.m. this morning.

According to their reports, a motorcycle and SUV collided on New Road near the Stripes Gas Station.

The SUV was headed west along New Road that morning when it tried to make a left-hand turn into the Stripes parking lot, it seems. However, the SUV turned right into the path of an eastbound motorcyclist, which caused a collision. The news said that the driver didn’t see the motorcycle.

The man on the bike was taken to a hospital with injuries, though nobody in the SUV was harmed. Right now, it’s not clear if anyone is facing charges.

Commentary:

The driver “didn’t see” the motorcycle? I’m sorry, but that sounds a little strange to me and I wish the news reports here did a better job of explaining exactly what happened. It’s clear that this is still under investigation, but I wanted to take this opportunity to remind my readers about the dangers of motorcycle bias. What I’m talking about is the tendency folks (even police officers) have to assume that any accident involving a motorcycle is automatically their fault. It’s easy to think that motorcyclists all drive 100mph around town, but that’s not really fair to the rider in the event of an accident. Objectivity and the benefit of the doubt are the best ways to approach an accident scene because your judgement isn’t clouded by some preconceived notion that because the accident involved a motorcycle, that it was speed-related.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
