Trucker Injured after Accident with CSX Train in Hawthorne, FL
www.firstcoastnews.comHawthorne, Florida — The news reports out of Hawthorne said that a log truck was involved in an accident with a CSX train on Florida Highway 20A. This was on Thursday, July 30, and the driver of the truck was treated for minor injuries. According to the news, the CSX train had been going in reverse on the tracks that day, near Sunnyside Beach Road and Palatka Road. The train was carrying dog food products, the news said, when it was hit by a log truck that was trying to drive north on Florida 20A.
The accident stopped the train and truck, but the trucker was able to escape his cab without suffering any serious injuries.
Nobody on the train was harmed.
The police made sure to note that while the railroad crossing did not have any kind of crossing arms that would prevent traffic from crossing, they pointed out a warning light was present.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
