San Antonio — This past Wednesday morning, July 15, 2015, there was a major accident on the SW side of town off Loop 410. Police with the SAPD said that an 18-wheeler truck owned by Bear ReadyMix Concrete accidentally lost control on Loop 410 and crashed near Old Pearsall Road, leaving the driver with injuries. This happened on Wednesday morning, but the specific time wasn’t stated. Right now, all that’s clear is that the driver was rushed to hospital and was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

From the news reports, it appears that the 18-wheeler was headed along Loop 410 when the driver lost control (or the truck did) and it swerved off the highway and down a steep embankment.

The truck then overturned and landed upright, spilling the trailer full of sand it was hauling. It was just the driver in the truck, a man in his 50’s, and he was hospitalized with injuries.

Commentary:

On a whim, I happened to catch the name of the company that owned this truck and looked up their records with the DOT. As it turns out, Bear ReadyMix Concrete is in the 86th percentile for vehicle maintenance violations — and this company only has 15 vehicles registered with the DOT! That tells me that this company has a hard time keeping its vehicles maintained and functioning properly, or they just don’t care enough to do it.

In either case, now that we know this information, you can see how finding out why this truck flipped over on the highway that morning might not be so straightforward, right? It would be easy to simply blame the driver and say he lost control, but what if something was broken on the truck? What if some sort of mechanical failure outside the driver’s control caused this accident?

Perhaps I’m completely wrong here and this was just a one-time, freak accident that will never repeat itself. Somehow, though, I doubt it and it seems like this ought to be investigated very closely — along with the company that owns the truck.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
