Concrete Truck Flips Over After Tire Blowout Accident on Loop 410 in San Antonio, TX

San Antonio, TX — There was a serious wreck that the news covered this past Tuesday morning, July 14, at about 10:30 a.m. on Loop 410 in the southeast corner of the metroplex. They said that a large concrete truck accidentally blew out a tire and flipped over on Loop 410, injuring the driver.

This happened near Somerset Road, which is close to Loop 410’s exchange with I-35.

The way the news reports describe it, the concrete truck was headed along Loop 410 when the tire blew out and it veered off to the right side of the road.

Once it was on the grassy shoulder, the truck flipped over and crashed into a large metal utility pole. The accident left the driver with serious injuries, but he was believed to be in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

The cause of the blowout is allegedly being investigated some more.

Commentary:

Blown tires can happen for a number of reasons, but when they happen on commercially-owned trucks, there should be red flags going up. Wear & tear and debris are only two of the more common reason that a tire might blow out, but the other reasons include: wrong sized tires, improperly installed tires, or even defective tires.

Now I will say that this, a lot of companies that own big trucks don’t take care of them like they should. They don’t change the tires often enough and their drivers end up getting (or someone else does) because they aren’t given road-worthy vehicles in the first place.

Before people start blaming this driver for this accident, do a little research on tire failures because I think you’ll find they’re a little more common than you’d imagine. It may be that this truck driver was simply a victim here.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
