BENTON, IL — Representatives from Franklin County named Sergio Mendez-Diaz as the teenage boy that died in an accident on an ATV outside Benton, Illinois on Saturday, June 20th, 2015. Authorities in charge of the accident investigation indicated the time the accident happened at around 10:00 Saturday night.
Police currently think that 14-year-old Sergio Mendez-Diaz died when the ATV he was a passenger on crashed on a rural gravel road. The news indicated that the ATV struck a fallen tree in the road when both Diaz and the driver were thrown from the vehicle.
Diaz sustained massive injuries and died at the scene. The driver of the ATV was identified as 29-year-old Abraham Romero, who was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
