Semi-Truck Flips Over in Rock Island, OK and Driver Mark Howell Injured

Rock Island, OK — The news reports out of Arkansas and Oklahoma confirmed that an accident happened near the border (Rock Island) that left a truck driver injured on Wednesday of this week, June 10, 2015. Mark Howell was identified as the trucker who was injured and it appears that he was working for Stone Trucking at the time.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol wrote that Howell was driving his semi-truck along Highway 112 this past Wednesday when he took a turn and the truck lost control. It ran off the edge of the road and accidentally rolled onto its side.

Later, police said that it appears his tire blew out that afternoon. Howell was injured in the accident, but not critically. He was hauling a large cooler fan at the time.

Commentary:

Tires popping on the road is a very serious matter, and this driver is lucky that he wasn’t too badly injured. I know I’ve certainly seen some bad semi rollover wrecks, and I’m sure he has too. But, before people start assuming this tire blowout was completely out of left field, remember that sometimes tires go bad for very predictable reasons. The more common ones are: wrong sized tires, defective tires, improperly installed tires, and too much weight on the tires. There are other ways things can go wrong, but those are some of the ways a driver can lose control in an accident that isn’t his fault. Who is responsible for truck tires blowing out? It really depends on the case, but it can be anyone from the mechanic who installed them, the company that manufacturer them, or even the company that owns the truck.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
