YUMA, AZ — Local Police representatives have confirmed Joyce Wickam was the woman that was injured in an accident with a car in Yuma, Arizona on Tuesday, June 2nd, 2015. Local news outlets said that the accident happened at about 9:30 Tuesday night.

At this time, authorities suspect that 81-year-old Joyce Wickam was hurt when she was hit by a Ford Focus while she was trying to cross the street in a crosswalk at the intersection of 4th Avenue and 14th Street. The news said that the car was northbound of 4th when it hit the pedestrian.

Commentary:

News reports indicated that the victim was in a crosswalk when she was struck, and photos from the scene seem to illustrate that the vehicle may have crossed the intersection and hit the woman on the opposite side. If this turns out to be true, then the driver of the car is probably facing a very valid claim. If the vehicle had to cross the length of a major intersection, that means that there was probably ample distance and time to see the woman in the crosswalk and avoid the accident. To add insult to injury, the victim was in a crosswalk when she was struck. Just from what I’ve gathered from multiple news sources, my instincts tell me that this accident could have been avoided if somebody was paying closer attention to the road.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
