Commentary:

Even though there isn’t a great deal of information to work off of in the news, based on what I’ve seen, I’d be willing to go out on a limb and estimate that it may not have been pilot error that caused the crash. What makes me think this? Well, the fact that the pilot had enough control over the craft to make an emergency touchdown on a highway, for one. If the plane suffered from some kind of mechanical fault or catastrophic failure, there is a chance that the plane’s manufacturer could bear a portion of the liability. Now the NTSB may figure this out by themselves, but considering how backlogged they are with cases all across the nation, it may take them a year or a year and a half to do so. The time that the NTSB takes to pin down a cause can eat away up to 75% of the time victims have to file a claim, should one be warranted after the investigation.

Many times, and independent investigation arranged by victims or their loved ones can yield the answers they’re looking for much, much faster than an over-burdened government agency can provide them, in addition to giving them significantly more time to mull their options once they have some definitive answers.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
