Commentary:

While authorities work to determine which of the vehicles in this accident may have run the light, I think it would be wise to talk about what would happen if the police officer was not at fault in the accident. If the offending vehicle ran the red light and struck the officer while he was escorting a parade no less, chances are that driver is going to be looking at the fault, considering the visibility of both law enforcement, and parade floats. Now, what does this mean for the police officer? Well, quite a bit, actually. In addition to the claim against the insurance policy of the offending driver, the police officer would have the opportunity to file a workers’ comp claim with the police department. Normally, officers can seek both a claim against a driver, and the department concurrently, instead of having to choose one or the other. This path usually covers all the basis and benefits victims far more than having to choose between two options.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
