Commentary:
News reports said that the driver of the motorcycle may have been speeding, but these are based on witness accounts, and there may be a few phenomena at work here. First of all, a motorcycle driving at 45 miles per hour, and a massive tractor-trailer driving at the same speed are going to look like they’re driving at two completely different speeds, due to the disparity in size. Additionally, a loud vehicle like a motorcycle is going to seem like it is going a lot faster than a near-silent hybrid vehicle due to the noise output. Many people have a negative view of motorcyclists, and assume that they are all reckless and dangerous, and I call this motorcycle bias, which, unfortunately, police and accident investigators are not immune to. If this accident isn’t getting the fair shake it deserves due to such a slanted view, and independent investigation can be conducted by victims to clear the air, and possibly their name.
