Commentary:
If the reports from the news and witnesses are accurate, and the tractor-trailer did, in fact strike the rear of one vehicle, causing it to strike others, then I can’t really concoct too many situations in my head where the trucking company wouldn’t be faulted for this accident. If traffic had slowed down, why did the tractor-trailer not slow down with them? What did all the other (presumably non-professional) drivers out on the road with the truck that managed to slow down do that the truck driver couldn’t? Was he on his phone? Tinkering with GPS routes? Eating a cheeseburger? All it would take is a little digging in the right spots to know for sure, but until somebody does, nobody will.
