Update [November 19, 2015]: Corporal William Solomon has died from the injuries he sustained in this accident.
Garden City, GA — Police have identified Corporal William Solomon as the Port Authority officer who was injured in a tractor-trailer accident in Garden City, Georgia, on Monday, March 2, 2015.
Solomon was conducting routine traffic operations when he was hit by a tractor-trailer being driven by 63-year old Robert Lee Turner. Police later arrested Turner for driving while intoxicated, as well as driving without a vehicle tag.
Solomon was taken to Memorial Hospital following the accident. At last report, he was listed in critical condition. The accident is still being investigated.

I think it goes without saying that any tractor-trailer driver who’s going to get behind the wheel of his vehicle while he’s drunk has no business driving for a living. The thing you have to think about in accidents like this is, is this the first time the driver has ever done anything like this, or is this just the first time he’s been caught? Beyond that, there are questions we need to be asking of the trucking company he works for. Did the driver have a history of this sort of behavior, and if so, did the company know about it before hiring him? Unfortunately, there are more trucking jobs than there are drivers in the country right now. And unfortunately, that means are going to lower their hiring standards because they have deadlines they have to meet. In any case, I’m having a hard time coming up with an explanation from the trucking company that could possibly justify what happened. They’ve made a huge mistake, and need to be held responsible for it.
