Corpus Christi, TX — A young man was charged with intoxication assault in Corpus Christi earlier this morning, Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Police said that 20-year old Zachary Glazener was charged after his car was in a wrong-way accident along the South Padre Island Drive in the early morning hours.
So far, not many details about what happened are being released, but it appears that Glazener was driving his car the wrong way on the SPID early this morning. Police were notified and began to pursue him, but he crashed head-on into a van near the Everhart exit.
The driver of the minivan was injured with a broken leg and had to be taken to a hospital. Their identity wasn’t released, but it may have been a woman. Police said that she, her 23-year old male passenger, and 3 children in the car were all in good condition.
After Glazener was apprehended by police, he was charged with intoxication assault, as they believed him to be under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Commentary:
Given the age of the driver arrested here, and since alcohol is being considered a factor, do we know where he got the alcohol in the first place? Everyone knows that it’s against the law for liquor stores and bars to sell to underage customers, but did you know that those establishments can also incur liability for accidents that arise from those situations? Texas law makes it very clear that selling alcohol is a privilege, not a right. As such, there are rules to follow; the most important one is that bars and liquor stores can’t sell alcohol to anyone underage or who is obviously intoxicated.
When a bar breaks the rules, it’s just like a person being caught by police. There are consequences and fines, and the establishment might even lose their license. Moreover, if a bar or a liquor store sold alcohol to an underage customer here, then that establishment would also bear civil liability for anyone hurt by the drunk driver’s actions. Obviously, we don’t know where this driver was in the hours leading up to the accident, but I think it’s definitely something that needs to be investigated. After all, one of the best ways to stop drunk driving accidents with underage drivers is to find out who is supplying the alcohol.
