Oakland, CA — On New Year’s Day, early in the morning, the Oakland PD reported a fatal accident along I-580 that claimed the life of a young woman. The CHP is also involved in the accident investigation and said that they think it was alcohol-related.
The accident in question happened along I-580 at about 3:15 a.m. on Thursday morning, January 1, 2015. Travis Maresca, 20 years old, has been identified as the driver who was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter and DUI.
The CHP said that Maresca was driving a Toyota Scion along I-580’s eastbound lanes early Thursday morning with a female passenger. For reasons still under investigation, Maresca lost control near High Street and crashed into a pole near the exit ramp.
The female passenger in Maresca’s car was declared dead at the scene from her injuries while he himself was taken into custody after police suspected him of being under the influence of alcohol. More details will be released later as the investigation continues.
