Jason Cheely Killed by Accident with Lathe Machine in Sparks, NV

Sparks, NV — In early December of 2014, a worker lost his life at the Ebara International Corporation in Sparks. The man was later identified as John Cheely, 33, and it appears that he was caught in a lathing machine.

A combination of reports from the news and OSHA confirmed that Mr. Cheely passed away on Wednesday morning, December 10, 2014. He had been working at Ebara International that morning when he somehow got tangled up in an industrial-sized vertical lathe machine.

He was pulled into the machine and was killed immediately. Police investigated as well as OSHA, but it’s not clear yet what caused this to happen. One theory that was discussed was that Cheely’s clothes were caught in the lathe, but that’s not been confirmed.

Commentary:

I won’t pretend to know details here, because I don’t, but I will point out that while it’s very possible this was a simple accident, it’s also possible that this was caused by something we’re not seeing. Specially, I’m wondering if this lathe machine was checked over for maintenance and recent repairs, as well as any type of manufacturer defects or malfunctioning parts.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
