Chiquta Brown, Five Others Injured in Tractor-Trailer Accident on Oglethorpe Highway in Liberty County, GA

Liberty County, GA — Six people were injured in a tractor-trailer accident in Liberty County, Georgia, on Saturday, December 20, 2014. The accident took place on the Oglethorpe Highway near Liberty County High School, around 11:00 in the morning.

Police say the wheel came off a tractor-trailer, causing a Malibu to crash into a Mercedes in an effort to avoid hitting it. The woman driving the Malibu was identified as Chiquta Brown. Brown had three sons in the vehicle with her, and police say that she will be cited because two of them were not wearing seat belts.

James Jones was identified as the driver of the Mercedes. Janice Jones, who was in the backseat at the time, was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected through the windshield. She was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. A one-year old was in the backseat with her at the time, but his seat was not buckled in. Police say they will cited for that infraction.

The driver of the tractor-trailer is not expected to be ticketed.

Police say that they don’t expect to cite the semi-truck after all this. That may be the case, but it doesn’t really affect those involved in the accident, who seem to have reason to believe that the truck was responsible for what happened that day. The question we have to ask is, would the accident still have happened if the semi-truck hadn’t lost a wheel?

Police don’t always press charges following an accident like this. But bringing civil charges against a driver in these situations is a separate matter, and still an option to be considered as far as the victims’ concerns go.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
