FedEx Tractor-Trailer Accident in Barrow County, GA, Injures Police Officer on I-85

Barrow County, GA — A police officer sustained minor injuries after being involved in an accident with a FedEx tractor-trailer. The accident took place near the intersection of Interstate 85 and Highway 211, on Friday, December 19, 2014.

Reports say that the police officer — who hasn’t had his name released — was standing outside of his patrol car when the accident occurred. The FedEx tractor-trailer crashed into his car, before driving on a short distance and overturning.

Emergency responders were forced to extricate the FedEx driver from his truck before airlifting him to a nearby hospital. There has been no update on his condition.

No one else was involved in the accident.

Police are currently investigating the accident, and trying to figure out what it was that caused the accident to happen.

Commentary

The first question that needs to be asked, I believe, is why didn’t the driver of the FedEx truck see the police vehicle on the side of the road? If this is a case of the driver simply not paying attention to what was in front of him, what was he paying attention? If the driver wasn’t doing his job then it’s no question that he can be held liable for the accident. But there are questions beyond that that need to be answered. In my experience, where I’ve seen smoke, I’ve often seen fire. My worry is that this isn’t the only bad decision this driver is making while out on the road.

Unfortunately, this is where people stop listening to these discussions, as they typically devolve into discussions about lawsuits and money. I think that’s a mistakes, for everyone involved. Lawsuits to involve money, yes. But they’re also a chance to hold companies responsible for mistakes they’re making, and to revisit the way they run their businesses, so that these sorts of accidents can hopefully be involved in the future.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
