Liverpool, NY — The woman who was injured after being hit by a falling POD storage unit has been identified as Alicia Henderson. The accident happened at a POD storage facility on Stelway Blvd. in Liverpool, New York, on Thursday, December 11, 2014.

Reports say the woman was unloading one of the units that was sitting on top of a truck when the accident occurred. The straps securing the unit became tangled, and the entire thing fell on her when she tried to untangle them and they came loose.

An employee at the facility was able to free the woman using a forklift. She was taken to Upstate University Hospital and is in critical condition.

Commentary

The straps on a storage unit like this, especially when it’s secured to a truck, coming undone doesn’t sound right. Was the woman undoing the straps that secured the unit, or was there something wrong with them? News reports are a little sparse on details, so it’s possible there are pieces of this story we’re missing. But this sort of thing seems like something the company should have been aware could happen, and should have taken protective measures against. I’m not familiar with this company myself. Often, similar storage units will have some sort of waiver customers sign freeing the company from liability in the case of injury, but if there was something wrong with the equipment itself, it may still be responsible for the accident.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
