New Orleans, LA — John Alexander was killed in a single-vehicle accident in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Monday, December 8, 2014. Police are now trying to figure out if the driver in that accident was intoxicated at the time.
John Alexander was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by Isaac Nelson. Nelson was speeding in the 2800 block of Tchoupitoulas Street and crashed into a parked car. Their vehicle went airborne and crashed. Alexander died in the accident.
Police said that Nelson could barely stand and was slurring his speech after the accident. He also smelled like alcohol and refused a breathalyzer test. He was taken to Interim LSU Hospital, where officials took blood and urine samples. Results of those tests are pending.

Man I’ve spoken to in the past are a lot of misconceptions about how passengers are covered in the case of an accident. Many believe they have no coverage, or are maybe covered by their own policy. Neither is true. In these cases, passengers are covered by the driver’s insurance, which effectively makes the driver responsible for his passengers. Drivers have a legal obligation to create and maintain a safe environment for their passengers, so if a passenger is injured because of unsafe practices the driver was engaged in, they can be held responsible for that.
