HUMBLE, TX — One person was pronounced dead following a single-vehicle accident that happened in Humble, Texas on Tuesday, November 25th, 2014. The article released by Click 2 Houston said that the accident happened around 11:00 Tuesday night.
Police said that one person was killed when the car they were driving crashed in the 400 block of Bender Avenue. Authorities think that the vehicle left the road before it crashed into a nearby apartment building.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead on the scene. It is not clear if any of the ten people in the apartment reported injuries.
The investigation into the accident is currently ongoing at this time.

With any kind of late night single-vehicle accident, I see one of two possible outcomes. The driver could have been tired and zoned out or nodded off behind the wheel in the moments leading up to the accident. Believe it or not, this is a pretty common occurrence, especially around the holidays where people are drained by the hustle and bustle of family and making plans. On the other hand, even though it is not mentioned in the article, the driver of the car could have been making their way home from a bar or restaurant where they were served too much to drink. Bars exist to serve alcohol in a safe and responsible fashion, not to get people drunk, contrary to popular belief. There are actually laws set up that prevent bartenders and servers from getting customers drunk, or serving alcohol to somebody who is already drunk. As you can imagine, these laws are ignored with the same regularity as drunk driving laws, but which do you think gets punished more often? The state will punish the drunk driver (as they should) but it is up to victims and loved ones to hold bars accountable for the role they played, and the laws they broke leading to the accident. If bars are held liable for drunk driving accidents they help cause, maybe bars will start seeing drunk drivers as the liability that they are.
