UPDATE: Bradley Bonar Injured in Tractor-Trailer Accident in Albion, Indiana

ALBION, IN — Bradley Bonar was identified as the man that was hurt in an accident with a tractor-trailer that happened in Albion, Indiana on Monday, November 17th, 2014. The article released by WANE said that the accident happened sometime Monday night.

55-year-old Bradley Bonar was hurt when the car he was driving and a trailer that had unhitched collided on State Road 8. Police think that the trailer came unhitched while the truck driver made a wide turn. When the trailer separated, so did the cable that connects the lights on the vehicle. The trailer came to rest on the center line of the highway when Bonar’s vehicle struck it.

Bonar was taken to a nearby hospital for unspecified injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was identified as Maliton Silva, who was cited for driving left of center after the accident.

The Indiana State Police is still investigating the accident.

Commentary:

Very rarely do I see an accident where a trailer separates from a truck. Why do you think that is? Because so many things have to go wrong for it to happen, that it doesn’t happen very often, and when it does, you can bet somebody has made a series of very grievous mistakes. First of all, connecting a trailer to a semi-truck is not as easy as hitching a boat or a Uhaul to a trailer hitch on a pickup truck. There are a series of connections, and more importantly checks during the connection process that ensure everything is going right. Not only does the trailer have to be incorrectly connected, but these inspections were either skipped or forgotten about. Besides the trailer itself, power, air, and other lines have to be connected to make sure the brakes on the trailer, as well as the brake lights are all functioning properly. Now, I’m really wondering how the driver of the truck managed to do this, but one thing is for certain, the trucking company that hired and trained him needs to answer for the actions of their employee.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
