Commentary
There are two facts in the news about this accident that have grabbed my attention. The fact that the alleged drunk driver was only 18, and the fact that he was intoxicated. Now, a lot of people see no significance in where the drunk driver became intoxicated, only that they were drunk driving. Texas lawmakers didn’t quite see it this way. They knew that drivers have a responsibility not to drive drunk, but they also knew that businesses with a license to serve or sell alcohol have a responsibility to do so safely. Considering that in exchange for a liquor license, bars and restaurants promise the state to serve and sell responsibly, is it really crazy to think that they ignored these laws while serving an 18-year-old? If this driver became intoxicated at a bar, that bar more than likely broke laws just like the driver did by getting behind the wheel. I’ll keep saying it until I’m blue in the face: when a drunk driving accident happens, all parties that broke a law during the chain of events leading to the accident need to face be held responsible for their role.
