One Injured in Forklift Accident at European Grantite and Marble in Jamesburg, New Jersey

JAMESBURG, NJ — One man was taken to the hospital after a major forklift accident that happened in Jamesburg, New Jersey on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014. The news report said that the accident happened at about 8:00 Wednesday morning.

Right now, police think that an unidentified 30-year-old man was hurt when the he was pinned in his seat after the forklift he was operating seemingly failed while in use. The accident happened at European Granite & Marble Group. It is not clear if the worker was hoisting anything at the time of the accident, but the lift of the forklift collapsed backwards onto the operators compartment.

The man was taken by EMS personnel to a nearby hospital where he was being treated for critical injuries.

The Jamesburg Police and representatives from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident.

Commentary:

Just looking at the photos of the accident, it seems to me that the forklift sustained some kind of structural failure, specifically the lift, or mast of the forklift. Was the forklift overloaded, or was there a problem with the design of the lift? Now, the media doesn’t really talk about industrial equipment recalls, but we see stories of automobile recalls all the time. Do you really think its plausible that only the automotive industry releases defective products? Absolutely not. The only problem is, with a recall, accidents have to happen before a manufacturer takes notice. If this is one such accident, bringing it to attention could prevent this thing from happening again, in addition to putting the forklift manufacturer in the position to take responsibility for the damages their product caused.

I'm a former employee. I had brought up this exact scenario and suggested a maintenance procedure that would eliminate the possibility of this type injury. Obviously my warning went unheeded.

I was actually a couple cars back from this wreck, one of the first on the scene, and helped administer CPR on the victims. The truck driver was going way too fast, but it was actually his trailer that swung around and hit the suv, the semi-truck ended in the median.

A lot of people say smack about lawyers, but I want to say that I'm glad there is a way that people who are wronged by corporate neglect can get justice and force change. We are living in a world where corporations and govt care less than ever about common people, and I support your work. I hope I will never need your services.

Thank you for posting these accident articles on your site. At the company that I work for, e deal with monitoring construction activity and work around trenches and all sorts of construction equipment/vehicles. I sometimes wonder if construction companies have enough safety training to inform employees of how to protect themselves while on the job.
